Pulled hamstrings, strained shoulders, and lower back strains are preventable. Our sports chiropractors break down the mechanics and give you the fixes.
Pulled hamstrings, strained shoulders, and lower back injuries are not random events. They follow predictable biomechanical patterns that, once understood, can be reliably prevented. Our sports chiropractic team sees these three injury types more than any other — and they are almost always preventable with the right preparation.
Hamstring strains most commonly occur when the muscle is forced to decelerate the leg during high-speed running while already under fatigue or in a lengthened position. Prevention comes down to three factors: adequate warm-up (never skip dynamic hip and leg activation), progressive load management (no sudden spikes in running volume), and hip extensor strength (weak glutes force the hamstrings to take on excessive load).
Shoulder strains in the gym are almost universally associated with internal rotation dominance — the result of too much bench pressing and not enough rowing. For every pressing movement, program a pulling movement. Include face pulls and band pull-aparts in your warm-up to activate the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers before loading the shoulder joint.
Lower back injuries during lifting are almost always a bracing issue. The spine is not designed to flex under heavy compressive load — it is designed to remain neutral while the hips and knees do the work. Learn to properly brace your core (360 degrees of pressure, not just sucking in your belly), and practice the hip hinge pattern with a dowel rod on your back before adding weight. One session with our sports team can identify your specific weak links and give you a targeted prevention protocol.
